The photograph collection of Emperor D. Pedro II

As part of the commemorations of the Portuguese Real Family bicentennial arrival in Brazil, the National Library, with the support of the Getty Foundation, launches a website dedicated to the photographic collection of Emperor Pedro II. This set, composed by about 23,000 photographs, is an integrant part of the Emperor's particular library and donated by him, in testament, its bigger part, to the National Library, called "Collecção D. Thereza Christina Maria", in homage to the Empress. It is the biggest donation ever received by the National Library.

The "D. Thereza Christina Maria" photographic collection is composed by referring images to Brazil and the world of XIX Century that portray the reality of the period and reflects the personality of the Emperor and his interests.

With the financing of the Getty Foundation, the National Library was able to treat, digitalize and divulge this valuable photographic quantity, registered by UNESCO in the Memory of the World Program as heritage of humanity.

As result, the digitalized photographs are available, along with historical research and complete bibliographical description, making possible to the researchers an including and detailed vision of this precious collection.

This way the National Library fulfills its mission to guarantee the dissemination of the knowledge divulging its vast collection and contributing for the preservation of the national memory.
