Timeline

1907Decree n. 1825, of December 20, 1907,  which provides, in its 1st art. – paragraph 1, on the shipment of printed works to the Biblioteca Nacional (National Library), including magazines and newspapers.

1911Decree n. 8835, of July 11, 1911, establishes the Regulations of the Biblioteca Nacional (National Library), links the collection of periodicals to the 1st Section (Prints) and defines a special room for consulting periodicals (art. 78).

1918Mention of the need for a reform of the Institutional Regulation of 1911 and suggestion of splitting the 1st Section (Prints) into two: Section of Printed Works and Section of Periodicals.

1922Establishment of the periodical publications unit (4th Section), by the Decree n. 15,670, of September 6, 1922, effected by the Ordinance of September 20, 1922.

1944 – The Seção de Periódicos (Periodicals Section) becomes part of the Divisão de Consulta (Consultation Division), through the approval of the Regulations of the Biblioteca Nacional (National Library) by Decree No. 16,167, of July 24, 1944.

1946 – The Seção de Periódicos (Periodicals Section) is renamed the Seção de Publicações Seriadas (Periodical Publications Section), subordinated to the Divisão de Circulação (Circulation Division), with Decree-Law 8679, of January 18, 1946.

1967 – The importance of the collection of the Periodical Publications Section is highlighted in the series of reports  on “The Press in the Archive”, published in Jornal do Commercio.

1972 – Beginning of the process of microfilming journals to preserve the collection.

1975 - The Periodicals Section is renamed the Periodicals Section, subordinated to the General Reference Division, as of Ordinance 470, of October 1, 1975, of the Ministry of Education and Culture, which approves the new Internal Rules of the Library National.

1978 - Creation of the National Microfilming Plan for Brazilian Periodicals, a partnership between the Seção de Periódicos (Periodicals Section) and the Laboratório de Microfilmagem (Microfilming Laboratory) with the Casa de Rui Barbosa Foundation and with the objectives of identifying, locating, organizing, recovering and preserving, through microfilming, the Brazilian hemerographic collection.

1984 – The annex building located in the Gamboa neighborhood, in the port area of ​​the city of Rio de Janeiro, is purchased, and the periodicals room in the headquarters building is renovated.

1990 - The Seção de Periódicos (Periodicals Section) has a new administrative configuration with the transformation of the Biblioteca Nacional (National Library) into a Foundation, through Decree nº 99.603, of October 13, 1990.

2006 - The Hemeroteca Brasileira Project: the Print Media Library is approved for the annex building. As of July, the technical processing of newspapers was fully transferred to the Coordenação de Publicações Seriadas (Coordination of Serial Publications).

2012 – Launch of the Hemeroteca Digital Brasileira (HDB) project, financed by FINEP and which made available around 7 million digitized pages of more than 700 newspapers and magazines since the 19th century, in the public domain, for digital research.

2018 – The unit is renamed Coordenação de Publicações Seriadas (Coordination of Serial Publications), subordinated to the Centro de Coleções e Serviços aos Leitores (Center for Collections and Services to Readers), with the approval of the Internal Regulations of the Fundação Biblioteca Nacional (National Library Foundation), governed by Ordinance MINC n. 74, of August 3, 2018 and art. 4 of Decree No. 8.982, of February 6, 2017.

2022 - The Coordenação de Publicações Seriadas (Coordination of Serial Publications) is internally restructured with Ordinance FBN n. 82, of December 23, 2022, approved by Decree No. 11.233, of October 10, 2022.
