A restauração da fachada da Biblioteca Nacional (BN) representa um marco na história da instituição e do edifício, que completará, em breve, 108 anos. Trata-se de uma intervenção sem precedentes que envolveu mais de 120 colaboradores, entre técnicos e operários, com a participação ativa de todo o corpo de servidores da BN.
O arquiteto e fotógrafo Marcos Gusmão foi convidado a registrar o desenvolvimento deste trabalho. A partir deste olhar, a beleza da arquitetura foi novamente revelada a cada dia pelos profissionais que, através da lente do fotógrafo, tiveram seu trabalho inserido no tempo histórico do monumento.
De um conjunto de mais de 10 mil imagens, foi feita uma seleção em afinidade com os temas que emergiram deste universo: Arquitetura, Detalhes, Trabalho e Retratos. A partir deles, propomos um diálogo das imagens fotografadas da obra com o acervo bibliográfico da Biblioteca Nacional. A exposição é aberta com algumas peças do acervo que contam a história do edifício e revelam sua importância para a cidade do Rio de Janeiro, com lugar de honra para o Álbum da Construção.
Livros, periódicos, estampas, desenhos, fotografias e até mesmo um disco long play da coleção da BN estão presentes nesta mostra. Eles estabelecem uma conexão com as imagens da obra, valorizando a importância da restauração para a preservação da memória brasileira.
A palavra escrita está aqui também especialmente exposta em poemas e citações literárias, colocados lado a lado com vestígios materiais colecionados durante as obras. Está a partir de agora registrado em imagens e livros a história da restauração da fachada da Biblioteca Nacional, o que não teria sido possível sem o trabalho das mãos que restauram o tempo.

Restoration of the National Library is a landmark in the history of the institution and of the building per se, which will soon come to its 108th anniversary. It is indeed an unprecedented intervention that involved more than 120 collaborators, including craftsmen and laborers, and involved active participation of the entire staff.
Architect and photographer Marcos Gusmão was invited to keep records of all steps in the process. From this viewpoint, the beauty of the original architecture was once again revealed, at every stage, by the professionals whose technical work was photographically inserted in the historical timeline of the monument.
From an ensemble of over 10,000 images, a selection was made to match the themes coming forth in this endeavor: Architecture, Details, Labor, and Portraits. And they are the base for our proposed dialog between the photographed images of the construction works and the National Library’s bibliographical wealth.
The exhibition is open with some of the pieces from the entire collection that tell the building’s story, revealing its importance for the city of Rio de Janeiro, with a place of honor for the Construction Album.
Books, newspapers, stamps, drawings, photographs, and even a Long Play record from the National Library’s collection are included in this show. They establish a connection with the images thereof, and underline how important the restoration effort has been for the preservation of the Brazilian memory.
The written word is also importantly exhibited in poems and literary excerpts, displayed side by side with material traces collected during the civil works.
So here is the recorded history of restoring the National Library’s façade, a deed which would not have been accomplished without the labor of hands restoring time.
